Overview of National Education Policy 2020

The National Education Policy 2020 (NEP 2020) was approved by the Union Cabinet of India on 29 July 2020.

As of now, it is a vision document. Much will depend upon how it is implemented.

According to this document
The 10+2 system of education which we have now will change to 5+3+3+4.

There will be four stages.

Foundational Stage: Pre nursery, nursery, kg, class 1 & class 2 will come under this stage and will cover children of ages 3-8 years. Now playschool will come under the ambit of formal education.

The focus of studies will be activity-based learning.

Preparatory Stage: It will cover classes 3 to 5 and children from age of 8-11 years. It will gradually introduce subjects like languages, art, science, and mathematics.

Middle Stage: This will include Classes 6 to 8, covering children between ages 11 and 14.

At this stage, students will be introduced to more abstract concepts in subjects of mathematics, sciences, social sciences, arts, and humanities.

Coding will be introduced at this stage from class 6. Besides coding, the policy also makes integration of vocational education with internships for students with carpenters, laundry persons, or craftspersons to learn vocational skills.

Secondary Stage: This stage includes classes 9 to 12 covering the children of ages of 14-19 years. Now the change mentioned here is the liberty of choosing subjects of your choice. If a student wants to pursue fashion studies with physics or if one wants to learn psychology with chemistry, they'll be allowed to do so. Now here the success of giving this liberty depends upon the admission process in colleges.

In the present system also CBSE has the provision of choosing any subject in class 11 & 12 but the problem arises when a student has to apply for fo college admission. They want a particular combination of subjects and that is the reason school has divided these combinations into streams.
